Newport, county seat of Cocke County, Tennessee, is located along the Pigeon River. The Gilliland family donated 50 acres, sometime in the 1790s, for a town square and courthouse to be situated opposite Fine’s Ferry and the town of “New Port” was born. In the early 19th-century flatboats were a convenient mode of transportation and “New Port” being situated along the French Broad river made it a flatboat trading hub. Trains later replaced flatboats and as the train tracks were on the other side of the river, in Clifton, efforts were made to annex but failed. A new courthouse was built in Clifton in 1884 and the area was renamed “Newport”.
Newport has seen large increases and declines in the area’s population over the years. However, currently there has been a lot of re-growth as well as new developments pop up throughout the Newport area.
